"Majorca holidays (Spain) - Cheap holidays to Majorca"
Majorca, sometimes spelt Mallorca, is a beautiful Mediterranean island with a mild climate and amazing variety – towering mountains, magnificent coastlines and beaches, rolling fields of almonds, olives, citrus and vines, cosmopolitan cities and delightful villages. The real Majorca has much more to offer than sun, sea, sand and party! Naturally, the buzzing resort areas scattered along the beautiful coast are as popular as ever, but the quieter parts of this fascinating island, and its old traditions and values, offer a different perspective. Due to all year sunny Majorca weather the island is one of the hottest European vacation destinations, and now that the secret is out, and it is becoming one of the best known vacation spots in the world! |
In more recent times Majorca has reinvented itself with an emphasis on more upmarket tourism with visitors encouraged to explore the island's beautiful coastline and interior. The east coast of Majorca consists of more than fifty secluded coves of enormous beauty. Cala Millor or Cala Bona are ideal bases from which to discover this region. Majorca's north east coast has an enormous bay which is home to the popular resorts of Can Picafort and Alcudia. Nearer the island's most northerly point at Cap de Formentor is Puerto Pollensa which has been a favourite with holidaymakers. This whole area is popular with cyclists, walkers and birdwatchers |
Palma de Mallorca is the island’s capital and the administrative centre of the Balearic Islands, and is a bustling, busy and cosmopolitan city. A Gothic cathedral and a medieval castle lend Palma historical interest and, with luxury shops crowing graceful boulevards and millionaire yachts packing the marina, the city is chic and classy. Majorca is a well-balanced island, in that although tourism is its foremost revenue earner, it is by no means the island’s sole economic activity. There is a well-developed show and leather goods industry, and a whole range of products, from furniture to cultured pearls, is manufactured on the island. |
Unlike neighboring Ibiza, Majorca is an extremely popular vacation destination for families. In fact, a majority of tourists that visit Mallorca bring children, so many of the resorts here cater for their needs. Many of them have play areas and planned activities that entertain as well as occupy the little ones so that mom and dad have some time to themselves. Don’t be surprised to see beaches, restaurants and most public spaces filled with small children, and expect the local folk to make a fuss of your little one. |
While many people know Majorca for the beaches and marinas, Majorca is mountainous in the northwest, rising to 4,739 ft(1,444 m) in the Puig Major. The inland areas of Majorca are very popular with cyclists. The road Pollenca to Playa Formentor up the mountains to a fantastic viewing point labeled Formentor Viewpoint 1 and 2 on the Majorca Tour. Many castles and churches were also built at the tops of the mountains. These include the Polleca Monastry and St. Luc Monestry. |
